When I think of Gorditas, I always remember coming to El Mercado as a child amazed by the sights and smells this place has to offer.  La Cocina  specializes in Gorditas and has built their business on this unique sandwich.  A toasted, fried shell with refried beans, lettuce and a choice of meats i.e. asada, carnitas, buche, chicharron, chicken, pastor, etc.  This is the Mexican version of a pupusa only stuffed bigger and meatier and not sealed like its cousin the pupusa.  I had both the asada and the carnitas and both were tasty but I give the nod to the carnitas for best flavor.  They hand you a baggy to put the pickled carrots and onions and they give you a mild salsa to add to the gordita.  One warning, these gorditas are addicting and your hands will get greasy so make sure you have a couple of napkins handy.  This place is order at the counter and they give you a number and if you eat there, find a table and eat on paper plates then go on to explore the rest of the market.

Im only giving it a 3 star for the service. I Have been coming here for about 20yrs now. The gorditas and tacos de papa are good ( and very greasy) and the pickled carrots. Only problem is they seem to always get cashiers that look like they don't want to be there.  Don't really smile and are distracted most of the time.
But, definitely go try them out.
Stay away from asking for a  cup of ice, the girl sticks her hand in the ice machine with the cup while she is also touching money (naaaaaaaasty and unsanitary) and they still charge you for giving you an unsanitary cup.
